Job Responsibilities
Depending on area of study and placement with the mill, students will have an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the following:
Stock Prep
• Calibrating broke related consistency transmitters
• Pipe length and sizing
• Performing and interpreting test results
• Analyze losses in stock prep by system
• Determine effect of anionic trash on chemical efficiency
• Test Zeta potential, on furnish streams before and after chemical addition. Test ph and conductivity as well
• Water consumption mapping
• Energy consumption
Wet End
• Sheet Break Identification SOP, Checklists, and Training Development
• Machine Speed Restrictions
• CD profile 2 sigma improvement – Moisture/Basis Weight/Strength/Formation
• Wet End Charge/Zeta Analysis
• Thick stock consistency control
• Press Felt Cleanliness; Optimization ROI
Dry End
• Conducting CIDs
• Reliability improvement
• Safety audits
• Steam optimization
• P&IDs
• Cycle time assessments
Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
• Basic principles of engineering
• Project research, field work, preliminary design calculations and analysis
• Collecting and maintaining project documentation
• Project work to develop technical, social and ethical skills
Electrical/Maintenance
• Basic principles of engineering
• Project research, field work, preliminary design calculations and analysis
• Collecting and maintaining project documentation
• Project work to develop technical, social and ethical skills
Other key tasks and learnings:
Attend morning production meetings, monthly quality meetings, shutdown meetings, and more.
Work to understand machine parameters in relation to paper quality.
Qualifications
• Candidates working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Paper Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Biochemistry Engineering, or Applied Statistics & Data Analytics
• GPA 3.00 or higher
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment
• Ability to work independently and as a team
• Ability to manage time to meet deadlines
• Strong attention to detail
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Availability to work full time (40 hours/week), in-person for the Spring semester (Jan-May) or Spring/Summer (Jan-Aug) of 2024
Additional Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working with any of the following Microsoft applications: Outlook, Visio, Power BI, Forms, Teams
• Knowledge of statistics
• Experience working with JMP
• Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma principles and tools
• Experience working in manufacturing
